Hanzo, often referred to as Hanzo of the Salamander, was the legendary leader of Amegakure (Hidden Rain Village) during his lifetime. He was a highly respected and feared figure, renowned for his immense power and tactical acumen. His reputation was so great that he was considered a potential obstacle to the Akatsuki's goals during their early days.

Hanzo possessed incredible combat abilities, including mastery of kenjutsu (swordsmanship) and the use of poison. He carried a kusarigama and possessed a poisonous salamander named Ibuse. Ibuse's poison was so potent that it rendered Hanzo immune to most toxins. Hanzo was known to wear a gas mask to protect himself and others from Ibuse's venomous breath.

His defining moment came during a battle against the young trio of Jiraiya, Tsunade, and Orochimaru. He acknowledged their strength and potential by bestowing upon them the title of "Sannin" (Legendary Three Ninja). Despite his seemingly benevolent action, Hanzo later displayed a ruthless side, betraying Yahiko, a leader of the original Akatsuki, under pressure from Danzo Shimura, leading to Yahiko's death and Nagato's subsequent transformation.

Hanzo's actions ultimately contributed to his downfall. He became complacent and overly cautious, leading to his assassination by Pain during Pain's invasion of Amegakure. Despite his death, Hanzo's legacy as a powerful and influential shinobi remained.
